55th Congress of the Union Internationale des Avocats: A Platform for the Future OHADAC Court of Arbitration

03 Oct 2011

Nancy-TheveninBack fourteen years after its convention in Philadelphia, the Union Internationale des Avocats invites you to the United States for its 55th Congress, to be held in Miami from October 31 to November 4.

As rightly noted by Dr. Pascal Maurer, President of the Union Internationale des Avocats, "for the last several years, the Miami region has witnessed such remarkable economic vitality that it has been described as a "Manhattanization" process: the construction of sky-scrapers, the establishment of the head offices of major companies, the expansion of the business district, international conferences and all sorts of events".

"Gateway to the Americas", platform of trade, transportation, logistics and tourism hub (#1 cruise port in the world to the Caribbean), Miami hosts a young, active Latin American and Caribbean population. Haitian Creole is an unofficial second language alongside Spanish.

Given this context, the Bureau of the International Arbitration Commission of the UIA will provide a forum for information during a joint session with the Commission of Law and Litigation Practice on OHADAC's initiative to establish a Court of Arbitration for the Caribbean.

Nancy M. Thevenin, special counsel, global coordinator of Baker & McKenzie's International Arbitration Practice Group, and a recognized expert in arbitration from the Caribbean, will present our vision of the OHADAC Court of Arbitration, a neighborhood-oriented, small and medium enterprise-dedicated institution, and will outline the steps to be taken to achieve this objective.
